An "Aquarium" is a new concept in buildingSMART, which brings together end-users and implementers. The idea is to address a specific scenario, where end-users see the need for support through IFC. The Aquarium will help to define the requirements for the end-users and to involve appropriate implementers who are willing to meet the requirements. The involved end-users and implementers are inside the Aquarium and can be observed by others outside the Aquarium.
The first Aquarium is dealing with QTO (Quantity Take Off). So any vendor offering a product with QTO-capabilities might be interested in this. The result of an Aquarium can be a new MVD (Model View Definition) and/or input to IDM (Information Delivery Manual) and/or input to a next IFC-release - don’t be afraid of all these terrible acronyms, they promised to explain all this in clear and understandable words, on 23 June 08.
Here is the invitation from the organizers. Implementers who have Groove-access please register there. Others please register at Bjorn Stangeland (bks@buildingsmart.no) . Our host needs the exact number and names of attendees.
Therefore please register until 4 June 2008 (both for the Aquarium and for the ISG-Meeting)
buildingSMART International AquariumProblem owner: Statsbygg Problem: Quantity Take Off (QTO) and costing of Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) When: Monday 23.rd of June 2008, from 11:00 till 17:00 Where: Bentley International, Wegalaan 2, 2132 JC Hoofddorp, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The goals of the workshop are
- Provide insight into the Statsbygg buildingSMART Aquarium on QTO and costing
- Gain feedback on method and content of the Aquarium
- Outline a potential certification process for the defined problem area
- Network different developers with common focus on QTO and costing
- Network different developers with the ISG members
AGENDA outline;
- Presentation of Aquarium concept (by Lars Chr Christensen / Bjørn Stangeland)
We will present the background for and the approach to the buildingSMART Aquarium. We also invite participants to provide feedback as the process and methods are under development.
- Presentation of Statsbygg’s buildingSMART Aquarium (by Lars Chr Christensen / Bjørn Stangeland / Thomas Liebich - MSG Chair / Jeff Wix - IDM coordination / Frode Mohus-Statsbygg / Ole-Kristian Kvarsvik-Statsbygg)
The focus in this Aquarium is on describing a preferred method for QTO and costing of MEP and get system developers to support this preferred method. We will present both methods and results that have been developed so far in the Statsbygg buildingSMART Aquarium. We will also get insight into the value proposition of Statsbygg.
- Feedback and alignment (by Lars Chr Christensen / Bjørn Stangeland / Thomas Liebich - MSG Chair / Jeff Wix - IDM coordination)
The scope is to develop a core concept with a global potential. It is therefore important to gain insight from different countries about their approach to QTO and costing and try to make an alignment. Both the German project and the North-American initiative will be presented shortly. The Aquarium also aim to describe a way of certifying the solutions developed within this Aquarium, and this must be seen in relation to the ongoing certification work in buildingSMART International.
- QTO for architectural elements(by Thomas Liebich - MSG Chair)
Review outcome of the German speaking QTO project and its alignment with the QTO aquarium - making sure we have a single and international definition of IFC based quantity take-off process support.
We hope that a lot of developers focusing on QTO and costing of MEP will take time to come to Amsterdam as this provides a unique opportunity to influence development, create valuable buildingSMART developer networks and get inspired about the global potential for good software solutions.
